Yorkshire Status: Rare and local resident.

In 1883 Porritt called this moth "very rare" but noted he had seen several taken by other collectors in the south of the West Riding. In 1907 he said it was "taken commonly on Oakworth Moor near Bradford". Curiously it seems to have disappeared from the west of VC63, the only record in the last 40 years being one near Howarth in 2011. Most of our records come from the limestone Dales, the majority being from the Ingleborough area. Even there it is usually seen in small numbers, with 85% of our records being of single moths, and the maximum being six at Duck Street Quarry on 17/7/2019. In 2016 it was rediscovered in VC62 at Ravenscar Mast, and several were seen near Whitby in 2022, so it is evidently an elusive beast which can hide for some time. Nationally this is a mostly a moth of rocky coastal areas. Yorkshire is a bit of an exception having colonies which are in upland rocky areas. Our population is probably stable, but it is difficult to be certain as we receive so few records.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: There are few recent records for this species in the County. Most are from the south-western Pennines, with one report from the North York Moors. Map 105 in MBGBI 9 shows a record in 10 km square SD99 in VC65 but at present this has not been traced. However it has been taken at several sites on the north side of Teesdale (IF; Dunn & Parrack, 1986), the northernmost boundary of the vice-county.
