Yorkshire Status: Fairly widespread resident.

In 1883 Porritt wrote "common in woods where ling grows freely, and found also in other situations, as the larva does not confine itself to ling". This is still true today. It is commonest in heather-rich areas on our moors and heaths, especially if there is adjoining woodland, but it often seems to turn up in other habitats. It is commonest in western and northern districts, and is uncommon in VC61 due to a lack of suitable habitat. The maximum count is 61 at Foxglove Covert (Catterick) on 29/8/2008. This is one of the more attractive species of late summer and early autumn and is unmistakeable when fresh.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Recorded from all five vice-counties, but absent from the Wolds and east VC61 (PQW). Locally common in woodland on the edges of moors and heaths but rather occasional elsewhere.

Recorded in 124 (62%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1883.
Last Recorded in 2023.
