Yorkshire Status: Common and widespread resident.

"Common, probably everywhere" said Porritt in 1883. This is still the case, however it appears to have become less common in the south and east of the county in recent years, and this ties in with the national distribution which shows that it has been lost from many of its old sites in the south and east of England. The largest counts occur in upland areas, the maximum being 84 at Thruscross Reservoir on 30/7/2010. It remains a common moth, but numbers seem to have reduced a little in recent years. Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Recorded from most habitat types in all five vice-counties. However it is fairly thinly distributed except near moorland and heathy localities where it may be frequent or common. The lowland VC61 specimens are stated to have a much brighter reddish-brown ground colour than the moorland specimens of VC62 which are more greyish-brown (PQW pers. comm.).
