Yorkshire Status: Local and uncommon resident.

Dog's Tooth must have been more widespread across Yorkshire in the 19th century as Porritt called it "rare but widely distributed" in 1883. He was able to list records from many sites across the county. It still occasionally turns up at inland sites, but the vast majority of records are from the Spurn area. Numbers seem to vary hugely from year to year, with an all-time low of just two records in 2021 followed by an all-time high of 69 records in 2023. There are healthy populations along the Lancashire coast and the Morecambe Bay area, and moths from this population occasionally wander to the west of VC64, though it is not obvious whether we have a resident population there. The larvae will feed on a variety of herbaceous plants, but seem happiest on saltmarsh species. It has always tended to be single-brooded in Yorkshire, however a large number of August records in 2023 were suggestive of a second brood.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: The only regular site for this species is Spurn (VC61) where it is well established. There have also been records from several new Yorkshire sites but most of these are fairly recent so it is not possible to say whether any of these might be from new colonies or whether they are merely strays. The record shown on map 157 in MBGBI 9 in VC62 (Wykeham, 11.7-13.7.1975) is almost certainly in error (PQW pers. comm.), and the two shown in VC63 have not yet been traced.
