Yorkshire Status: Scarce and local resident.

Although Porritt was able to list several sites for this moth, he described it as "not generally common" in 1907. This is certainly not a common moth in Yorkshire nowadays. We receive few records, and the last year we received over ten records was as long ago as 1985. Take great care in identification, as we find that the majority of "Tawny Shears" refer to other species. This is another moth which feeds on bladder campion and white campion, and like several other campion-feeders, is in national decline due to a lack of its foodplant because of grassland "improvement" and general tidying up of our countryside. Moths feeding on red campion such as Lychnis seem to be doing better.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Widely but thinly scattered and recorded from all five vice-counties. The larvae can be found on bladder campion.
