Yorkshire Status: Local resident.

Until recently, Deep-brown Dart was treated as two species - A. lutulenta known as Deep-brown Dart and A. luenebergensis known as Northern Deep-brown Dart. It has now been decided that we just have one species in Britain and that this is A. lueneburgensis. This has been given the name Deep-brown Dart, and that is what will appear in future checklists. The Atlas maps the two "species" separately apart from Yorkshire and Lancashire, whose recorders rightly refused to believe we had two species!

We have two main populations of this moth, one in eastern parts of VC62, and the other in VC63, particularly in the east. It does however occasionally turn up at other sites. It seems to be least common in the centre of the county and in much of VC61. It has never been a common moth in Yorkshire, and in 1883 Porritt branded it "very rare". Numbers may have increased a little in recent years. It is usually seen in ones and twos, however at some sites it can be commoner, particularly at Austerfield, where the maximum count is 38 on 25/9/2021.

Recorded in 36 (18%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1871.
