Yorkshire Status: Uncommon and very local resident.

Crescent Striped has always been a very local moth in the county. In 1883 Porritt wrote "Mr NF Dobree took 11 specimens and missed several others of this local species at the mouth of the Humber in August 1880" but this must have been an exceptional catch and it seemed to remain quite elusive for many years. From the 1970s, numbers built up at Spurn, peaking in the 1990s with an exceptional count of 238 on 19/7/1997. It also began to be recorded at some inland locations, particularly West Melton and Wintersett where there may have been resident populations, but all records since 2014 have been from Spurn where it is now recorded in much smaller numbers. In recent years there have been very few even at Spurn, though an increase to 24 records in 2023 was more encouraging. Nationally it is in decline and it has disappeared from many of its old haunts for no apparent reason. Like the rest of the Apamea genus this is a grass-feeder. In this case mainly on salt-marsh grasses. The smooth and rather silky appearance can help to identify it.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Now quite well established in south-east Yorkshire, and probably found along much of the Humber shore (Sutton & Spence, 1974a). There have been a few sporadic records from elsewhere in the County.
