Yorkshire Status: Abundant and widespread resident.

"Common probably everywhere" wrote Porritt in 1907, and we would not disagree nowadays. This is a moth of weedy places, the larvae feeding in the stems and roots of many different plants. Numbers are healthy in the county and we often receive over 1000 records per year. It is often seen in good numbers, the largest catch being 93 at Bishop Monkton on 5/9/2005. Although the size and colour can often vary, it is fairly distinctive, and the only moth you could mistake it for is the much less common Butterbur.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: This is a characteristic species of the autumn. It is widespread and often common in weedy places throughout all five vice-counties.

Recorded in 168 (84%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1857.
Last Recorded in 2023.
