Yorkshire Status: Scarce and local resident.

Nationally this is not a common moth, particularly in the south of England. It really ought to occur more widely - there is certainly no lack of its food plant across the county. In the 19th century, Porritt seemed to find it more commonly, but in those days he did not rely on light traps and will have targeted its food plant. It is unusual to find it more than 2-300 metres away from stands of butterbur as it is not a species that tends to wander. The population seems to be rather fragmented in the county though it keeps turning up in odd places suggesting that we have undiscovered colonies and it would be interesting to specifically target patches of butterbur in August and September with a light soon after dark. Numbers have been low in the last few years. It is usually seen in ones and twos, but if trapping close to the food plant, catches can be higher for example 11 at Rudston on 19/8/2012 and ten at Bellflask, north of Ripon on 17/8/1999. It is possible to mistake it for Rosy Rustic, but it is a larger brownerr moth, and never shows any pink colouration. There is little overlap in size.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Probably overlooked. Recorded sparsely in all five vice-counties.
