Yorkshire Status: Local resident and wanderer.

In 1883 Porritt said "abundant on the damp parts of the West Riding moors where the cotton grass grows freely". To a certain extent this is still true, and we would no doubt receive more records if people trapped more in these areas. 59 to light at Cowgill (Dentdale) on 3/9/2013 is the maximum count, though other good counts have been reported of day-flying moths, often on flower heads. Most of our records come from wet acid upland areas with cotton-grass, but it can also be found on lowland heaths, particularly Thorne and Hatfield Moors. It is much less common on our other lowland heaths. It seems to have a tendency to wander long distances, as it quite often turns up at lowland sites far from suitable habitat. It is not obvious where these moths have come from or what the larvae feed on, but it is possible that they use various species of rush. It is usually a fairly easy moth to identify, looking like a miniature Crescent. Numbers in the county are probably stable.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Locally common on moorland and lowland heaths, straying occasionally well outside these limits.
