Yorkshire Status: Fairly common and increasingly widespread resident.
This species is a relatively new arrival in the UK, first arriving as a rare migrant in the 1870s, then becoming established along the south coast in the 1940s. It continued to spread, arriving at Spurn in 1994. All records were from Spurn until 2001 when it began to spread further, arriving in VC64 in 2003, VC63 in 2006, VC62 in 2008, and VC65 in 2011. It has continued moving slowlly north and west and is now present all over the county except for the north-west. In the east it has spread north through Durham and into Northumberland.
Numbers are still increasing rapidly, with over 1500 records in 2023. There are two broods, from mid May to the end of June and from mid August to mid October and this helps to separate it from its confusion species, Uncertain and Rustic which fly from mid June to mid August. Vine's Rustic differs from these two species by having whitish hindwings and pale greyish plainer forewings with larger rounded reniform and orbicular stigmata (or kidney and oval marks if you prefer!). The first brood starts flying when Common Quaker is still on the wing, and reports of late "Common Quaker" often turn out to be Vine's Rustic, especially by those unfamiliar with the species. Late records of Rustic (and sometimes Uncertain) in October again often turn out to be Vine's Rustic. Big counts of second-brood moths can occur in the south-east of the county, for example 79 at Austerfield on 29th August.
