Yorkshire Status: Thinly distributed or restricted resident.

This is a day-flying species of rough grassy places with plenty of clovers and other Leguminosae. It is more at home on the higher ground then Burnet Companion so it has a wider distribution, being commonest in the south-western half of the county. The distribution must have changed a little since the comments in Sutton and Beaumont below. It appears to be doing quite well in Yorkshire with an increase in the number of records in recent years. The name is due to the wing markings which resemble the sideways profile of a witch with a hooked nose, a large chin and a beady eye!

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Found in scattered localities in the east of the County, favouring habitats such as railway embankments and rough grassland. It is also now becoming more widespread in the centre of Yorkshire.

Recorded in 108 (54%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1846.
Last Recorded in 2023.
