Yorkshire Status: Rare wanderer, possibly becoming resident.

Until the turn of the century this species was confined to East Anglia, Essex, and Kent, with most records fairly near the coast. Since then however there has been considerable spread to the west and also some northerly movement with moths appearing in Lincolnshire. Yorkshire's first record was of a moth trapped at Welwick Saltmarsh, west of Spurn, 12/7/22. This was followed in 2023 by two records from Spurn. It is highly likely that it will become established in the county. Its scientific name Macrochilo means “long lip” and refers to the long labial palps which are common in all related species, whilst cribrumalis is from cribrum meaning a sieve, referring to the sprinkling of fuscous dots forming the curved fasciae. It is a fairly distinctive-looking moth and is not likely to be mistaken for other Fan-foots (Fan-feet?) which are darker and more boldly marked. The larvae feed on wood-sedge, hairy wood-rush and field wood-rush so there is no shortage of food plant in the county. It should be looked for in wetlands, fens, bogs etc where it is said to favour the more open areas.
