Yorkshire Status: Rare and local resident.

Pheromone lures: MYO, CUL (the best).

This is one of the less common species of clearwing in Yorkshire and is the first to appear on the wing, flying in May and June. It should be looked for in open birch woodland where the larvae feed in birch stumps. Increased use of pheromone lures in recent years has revealed several new sites across VCs 61 to 64. There have been no records in VC65 since Porritt's lists.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Although still only recorded from one VC63 site, this species appears to have increased its range considerably, now also having many VC63 sites. The VC65 record previously mentioned for Copley (YNU, 1970) is thought to be an error for VC63, since the only Copley traced in Yorkshire is near Halifax.
