Yorkshire Status: Local resident.

The first county record was from Maitland Emmett in 1978 and leaf mines on rowan have been found in scattered areas across the county since then, but mostly in northern and western areas where it appear to be more common on native rowan than on planted rowan. There are currently no records from VC61. This is a much less common species than the rather similar Stigmella nylandriella on rowan but the mines are usually fairly distinctive. The corridor is narrow from start to end, and compressed into a small space, often along a major vein. The frass is in a narrow, regularly interrupted central line leaving clear edges. In thick leaves the frass line is broader, and the corridor is shorter. The mine can sometimes follow the leaf edge in the manner of nylandriella but does not show the thickly dispersed or coiled frass seen in that species. There may be several mines on a single leaflet. Beware mines of Lyonetia clerkella which are not uncommon on rowan and also show a thin line of frass.
