Yorkshire Status: Very rare and very local.

This is the rarest of the hawthorn-feeding Stigmella species and is not easy to identify. Mines on hawthorn can be mistaken for other species and some claims have turned out to be atypical Stigmella hybnerella which can occasionally have reddish frass in the early part of the mine. Typical regiella mines start from an underside egg, usually close to the leaf margin and sometimes on the petiole. The early gallery usually closely follows the leaf margin and the frass is reddish brown and coiled, filling the mine. In the final instar, the mine turns abruptly in the opposite direction with a thin line of blackish, dispersed or coiled frass, making an elongated blotch. The frass is typically deposited on the leaf-edge side of the blotch, which may take over the earlier mine. Mines are said to be present in shady areas in woodland. For further information on hawthorn mines, see More Info .

We have two old records, from York and Scarborough in Porritt's 1883 list, but have no way of verifying these. The next record was in the south-east of VC63 in 2014, and since then we have had several records in the same area and also in VC61.
