Yorkshire Status: Fairly common and thinly distributed or restricted resident.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Widespread and common, recorded from all five vice-counties.

2013 (CHF): This species is probably common across the county where the larvae mine hawthorn, though like many hawthorn-feeders it can be tricky to identify. Mines are similar to Stigmella oxyacanthella though this species mines in September and October when mines of crataegella are vacated. It can also be mistaken for Stigmella perpygmaella which can have a section of coiled frass in the mid part of the mine. The egg is underside, often close to a vein and sometimes on the petiole. In the early corridor the frass is in a central line but then becomes coiled. The mine turns in a series of hairpin bends with the loops very close together, often forming a secondary blotch. The mine sometimes crosses lateral veins. The larvae is bright green - similar to oxyacanthella.

Verification Grade Comment: Vacated mines may sometimes be unidentifiable

Mine: Either the leaf or a good photograph required
