Yorkshire Status: Local resident.

Those still using the original version of the AB&H checklist may not know that Luffia lapidella and Luffia ferchaultella are now considered to be the same species. The parthenogenetic "ferchaultella" being the asexual form of the sexually reproducing lapidella. The sexual form only occurs in Cornwall and the Channel Islands, so all of our moths are of the parthenogenetic form. Females are wingless.

There has been an increase in the number of records in recent years, and we now have many sites in the southern half of the county. There are no records for VC65. The larval cases are quite distinctive - round in cross section in the shape of a tilted cone and covered with fine material. The colour varies from green to black and there may be rings of different colours. The case stands almost perpendicular to the surface, unlike other confusion species, and cases are often seen in big numbers.

Retained Specimen / Photograph will be Required.

Case: A good quality photo or specimen of the case and plant/pabulum is required.

Recorded in 15 (8%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1993.
Last Recorded in 2024.
