Yorkshire Status: Fairly common resident.

This is a relative newcomer to the county. It was first seen in the UK in 1909 and has been spreading slowly from the south-west. Its origins are uncertain, but it may have come from Madeira, perhaps in imported ferns. It reached Yorkshire in 2009 when larvae were found on hart's-tongue fern in Halifax, and spread rapidly across the county, so that by 2020 it had been seen in all five vice-counties. It is now by far the commoner of the two Psychoides species. Unlike the previous species, this moth is continuously brooded and larvae can be found in any month of the year. The mines can be found on various species of fern, often as a displaced sporangium, but most records are from hart's tongue fern. The pale brown head and prothoracic shield of the larva are quite different from the black head of Psychoides verhuella, and the white tornal spot of the adult is distinctive. It commonly comes to light and is sometimes seen indoors. It can be attracted to pheromone lures, particularly SCO (Welsh Clearwing) and TIP (Currant Clearwing).
