Yorkshire Status: Fairly common resident.

This species may be more common across the county than the dots on the map suggest, as it is not always an easy species to identify. Adults can easily be confused with Caloptilia elongella so the safest thing to do is dissect these. It is surprising how often you will be mistaken! The larva makes a small mine on a birch leaf, then a blotch and then rolls the tip of the leaf, sometimes rolling the whole leaf up, unlike Caloptilia populetorum which folds the leaf longitudinally. Leaf rolls can also be mistaken for those of some tortrix species, but these tend to eat the upper epidermis of the roll.
