Yorkshire Status: Common and widespread resident.

This species was first found in the UK in 1971 and was added to the Yorkshire list in 1981 when Maitland Emmett found vacated cones on sycamore leaves on the Cleveland hills. After a slow start, it has now spread widely across the county and can be expected to be found wherever sycamore grows. We always used to accept records of leaf rolls/cones on sycamore, but since 2023, we have Caloptilia honoratella resident in the county, and this can form similar cones, so these records are no longer acceptable. The early mines however are different - that of rufipennella being a tiny mine in an angle between veins, unlike the branching mine of honoratella. The adult is relatively easy to identify. It is significantly smaller than C. elongella and C. betulicola and has dark greyish tibiae and femora, with a pale band across the fore-tibia.

Mine: Moth needs to be reared and, in some cases, possibly dissected.

Recorded in 134 (67%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1984.
Last Recorded in 2024.
