Yorkshire Status: Local resident.

This is a relative newcomer to the UK. Following rapid spread westwards across Europe, it was first found in the UK in Surrey in 2017. It appeared in Yorkshire in 2022, with records at North Ferriby in VC61 and Austerfield in VC62. By 2024 it had been found in all five vice-counties, and breeding had been proven with the discovery of leaf mines at several sites. It is not the easiest species to identify, so adults from new sites should be dissected. Mines on sycamore are a little easier. Larvae make silvery blotches on the upperside of the leaf. These typically have divertulae or dead ends, unlike the initial blotch of C. rufipennella which is a lower surface brownish blotch in the angle between veins. Leaf rolls/cones on the tips of sycamore leaves are similar in both species so are not diagnostic.
