Yorkshire Status: Local resident.

This species is a relative newcomer to the county, being first discovered by Maitland Emmett on Hatfield Moors in 1976. It remained confined to the south-east of VC63 until 2005, then started to spread north and west. We now have records from all five vice-counties, but it has not yet reached the north and west of Yorkshire. It occurs in a variety of habitats, the larvae feeding on black bindweed, docks, sorrels and other plants, rolling leaves into cones, in the manner of related species. There are two forms, an easily identifiable one with four cream-coloured spots - two on the costa and two on the dorsum, and a much drabber form, identifiable when fresh by a narrow white dorsal streak and a pale spot near the apex. Both forms occur in the county, but very few records mention it, so we cannot comment on the relative frequency. Neither are particularly "pheasant-winged" which is what its name means! It has become commoner in the last few years.
