Yorkshire Status: Very common and widespread resident.

This is the commonest of the Parornix species in the county, and should be present wherever hawthorn grows. It has been found in more 10K squares than any other species of microlepidoptera. Adults cannot be distinguished from other Parornix species without dissection, but identification of the leaf mine should be straightforward. The initial mine is a small wrinkled area at the leaf tip, which could be mistaken for Phyllonorycter oxyacanthae by the unwary, but has a brown (not green) surface. The larvae then constructs a characteristic triangular cone formed by folding down the leaf lobe. It is said to occasionally feed on wild service tree, rowan and strawberry, but alternative food plants have rarely been recorded in Yorkshire.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Widely recorded from all five vice-counties and usually very common.
