Yorkshire Status: Local resident.

This species may be commoner than the dots on the map suggest, as it cannot be identified from untenanted leaf mines due to confusion with Parornix torquillella. Like all Parornix species, adults cannot be identified without dissection. It seems to be reasonably common in most areas with blackthorn, but a little less common in upland areas. The larvae form a small underside tentiform mine which contorts the leaf, followed by two or more folds on the leaf margin. The larva is grey with black rings on the legs, unlike that of P. torquillella which is pale yellowish-green with concolorous legs. The other confusion species is Phyllonorycter spinicolella which also forms tentiform mines and leaf folds, but Parornix larvae can always be distinguished by the characteristic four small dots in a curved line on the prothorax.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Status uncertain due to confusion with P. torquillella (Zeller), present, information suggests that it may prove to be more frequent than P. torquillella in the south of the County.
