Yorkshire Status: Very rare resident.

This is not a common moth across the country. It may have been more common in the past, as in 1883 Porritt listed records from Richmond, Scarborough and York. It then disappeared for a very long time until a handful of oak leaves from Otterburn in the west of VC64 in September 2015 were collected to hatch out Phyllonorycter species. A single adult Phyllonorycter muelleriella emerged the following April and none of the commoner species. There are a number of Phyllonorycter species that form mines on oak, and these cannot reliably be told apart. Mines of this species typically extend between lateral veins from the midrib, and often two or three mines occur side by side. There is a single central crease. Adults are quite unlike any of the other oak-feeding Phyllonorycter species so once you have bred it out, the rest is easy. It is likely to lurk undetected at other sites in the county, especially in more upland areas.
