Yorkshire Status: Common and widespread resident.

This is a common species all over the county wherever rowan grows. Like many rowan-feeders, it is more likely to be found on native rowan and is less common on planted rowans in gardens. The vast majority of our records are of mines on rowan, but we have one or two from whitebeam and bird-cherry, which it seems to use much less frequently. The mines, on the underside of the leaf, are large and tentiform with strong creases, running parallel to the leaf margin. This often causes the edge of the leaf to fold over and there are often several mines on one leaf. Do not confuse these with the less common leaf folds of Parornix scoticella which are held together with copious amounts of silk. Adults need dissection to confirm their identity as they look very similar to several other Phyllonorycter species.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Recorded sparsely from all five vice-counties, sometimes locally fairly common.
