Yorkshire Status: Fairly common and widespread resident.

This is another of the sallow-feeding Phyllonorycter species, forming underside tentiform mines which are very similar to other sallow-feeding species, especially P. dubitella, so the adults must be bred out to confirm the identity. The books tell us that it feeds on goat willow, grey willow and eared willow, but all of our records that specify the willow species are of moths bred from goat willow. It appears to be fairly common across the county wherever goat willow grows. The adults should be identifiable by sight once you have bred them out, as they are sufficiently distinct from other sallow-feeders. The basal streak is short and broad, and the first pair of strigulae meet forming a wide outwardly-curving white fascia.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Recorded sparsely from all five vice-counties but there are few recent records.

Mine: Moth needs to be reared and, in some cases, possibly dissected.

Recorded in 44 (22%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1859.
Last Recorded in 2023.
