Yorkshire Status: Very common and widespread resident.

This is a very common species all across the county and mines are found on most beech trees. These take the form of long tubular underside tentiform mines between two ribs, usually creasing the leaf, though sometimes they can be at the leaf edge, folding it over. The mantra that P. maestingella forms long tubular mines and P. messaniella forms short fat ones on beech is not always true. Long tubular ones are always messaniella but this has at times also been bred out of shorter flatter mines, and aborted, broken or early mines of maestingella can resemble messaniella, so do be careful when recording these.
