Yorkshire Status: Local resident.

This species was first found in the UK in 1928. It took it until 2003 to turn up in Yorkshire, when mines on grey alder at Potteric Carr produced adult moths the following spring year. By 2011 it had been found in all five vice-counties. The hardest thing about finding it is to locate a grey alder tree. Once you have done that, life is fairly easy, as most trees now seem to have the characteristic tubular underside mines, and as this is the only Phyllonorycter which mines grey alder, identification is easy. There may be several mines on a single leaf. If you breed out the adults, you will be rewarded by one of the more attractive and distinctively marked Phyllonorycter species. Apparently it can rarely mine common alder, though this has not been noted in Yorkshire.
