Yorkshire Status: Very common and widespread resident.

This is the commonest of the alder-feeding Phyllonorycter species. In addition to common alder, mines can be found on Italian alder, but not on grey alder. These are triangular lower surface tentiform mines, usually not longer than 20mm and in the axil of a thick lateral vein. There is a single lengthwise crease. There are frequently several mines in a single leaf. When these are in their normal position close to the midrib, identification is easy, but on occasions they can be more peripheral which makes things harder, though the central crease is a giveaway.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Widely recorded throughout all five vice-counties and is common to abundant among alder.
