Yorkshire Status: Fairly common resident.

This species is fairly well distributed across the county. Of the three Phyllonorycter species forming underside mines on alder, it is less common than P. rajella but generally commoner than P. klemannella. Mines are large, often extending from the midrib to the margin of the leaf. The lower epidermis has no clear folds and usually appears quite smooth. The larvae are grey, distinguishing them from the whitish or yellow larvae of the other two species. There are often several mines on a single leaf. Adults can be mistaken for other species with two complete fasciae such as P. nicellii and P. klemannella.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Locally fairly common among alder in vice-counties 62 and 63 and a single record from VC64 at Harrogate.

Recorded in 69 (35%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1859.
Last Recorded in 2024.
