Yorkshire Status: Local resident.

There are two species which form lower surface tentiform mines on snowberry and honeysuckle. Keys in the literature imply they are easy to tell apart, P. emberizaepennella forming a large mine causing the leaf to roll lengthways and occuping most of the leaf, whilst P. trifasciella forms a smaller mine causing the leaf to fold more transversely into a cone. In reality it is not this easy, and many mines you find could be either if using these criteria! The best bet is to breed them through, or if you are impatient, have a look inside the mine. The pupa of emberizaepennella is in a tough papery cocoon, initially olive green, then later changing to pale brown. The pupa of trifasciella is not in a recognisable cocoon. This species seems to be the least common of the two in Yorkshire, though we have recent records from all five vice-counties. Most of our records are from honeysuckle, whereas most record of P. emberizaepenella have been from snowberry. Adults are very distinctive and should not be mistaken for any other species.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: A scarce moth with only three records. The statement by Porritt (1907) 'Probably common wherever honeysuckle grows well' cannot be substantiated.
