Yorkshire Status: Fairly common resident.

This species may be more common than it appears, as there are identification difficulties. It does however seem to occur over most of the county. Grey and white forms are indistinguishable from some of the other "Ermines" however the all-grey form can be identified as padella. The name padella is yet another misnomer, as it refers to bird cherry which is not a food plant, and "Orchard Ermine" is also pretty daft as it doesn't feed on fruit trees. The larvae form webs on blackthorn and hawthorn in hedgerows, and these can be quite extensive at times.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Widely recorded and often common in vice-counties 61 to 64, unrecorded in VC65.
