Yorkshire Status: Very local resident.

This is the least common of this group of moths. It was added to the Yorkshire list when it was found in the Rothamsted trap at Wykeham Forest in 1979, and it appeared there most years. There have been other scattered records in the north of the county, particularly at Foxglove Covert (Catterick) where it turns up regularly. We have no records from VC61 or 63. This lack of records is reflected nationally where it never seems to be common. It is mainly a rowan-feeder, apparently preferring open woodland with rowan seedlings growing under the canopy. The key in MBGBI separates it due to its significantly larger size and its evenly-coloured pale-grey tegulae, which are contrastingly-scaled in the confusion species. The front of the thorax is white, and the wings are uniformly grey with a small white costal mark before the apex. The main thing however that alerts the finder is the large size compared to the other species.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Very local but may be found more widely now that its life history is known (Agassiz, 1984a).
