Yorkshire Status: Local resident.

In 1904 Porritt wrote "probably abundant everywhere". This was also the opinion of Sutton and Beaumont, but the distribution map nowadays has some rather large holes in it, so it has either decreased in numbers or else we are failing to record it. It ought to be relatively easy to identify, as the coppery scales on the termen are quite distinctive, but you do need good close vision or a hand lens in order to see these, and they can be absent on worn specimens. It also tends to be a little darker than the confusion species. The attractive larva which is yellowish with red-brown stripes can be found feeding under a silken web on apple, hawthorn, blackthorn and other trees.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Widespread and very common, recorded from all five vice-counties.

Recorded in 68 (34%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1859.
Last Recorded in 2023.
