Yorkshire Status: Very rare and very local.

Porritt's lists mention several sites for this species, and in 1907 he wrote "abundant everywhere". There was however much confusion between the two Ocnerostoma species at the time and it is likely that most of his records will have been of O. friesei, as will the later records documented in Sutton and Beaumont. We have a single record of O. piniariella. An adult was beaten from pine at Armthorpe on 19/7/2018 and dissected to confirm the identity. The two species are extremely similar in appearance. O. piniariella males have grey antennae, ringed with white, and females have white antennae. The antennae of O. friesei are uniformly grey. Both have similar larvae which mine pine needles. A clue may be had by the date of capture. O. piniariella flies from June to August, so first generation friesei in April and May or late October/November third broods are likely to be that species, but dissection is generally needed.
