Yorkshire Status: Common and widespread resident.

In 1907 Porritt considered this species as "probably everywhere and often abundant". It remains a common species and is well distributed across the county, the larvae feeding on several species of trees. It is very much a woodland moth and is much less common in gardens. Counts of double figures are not uncommon in good-quality broadleaved woodland, the maximum being 37 at Pillmoor Carr on 14/8/2012. The wing markings are distinctive in the commonest form, but can be rather variable, and some forms are rather similar to the narrower-winged Y. ustella so take care.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Widespread and very common to abundant throughout all five vice-counties.
