Yorkshire Status: Very rare and local resident

This is a rare and elusive species in Yorkshire. The larvae apparently only feed on Elm in the UK, though in Europe it is polyphagous on a variety of broad-leaved trees. Our earliest records are from H.T. Stainton's A Manual of British Butterflies and Moths in 1859 when he noted Scarborough (common) and Yorks as sites - "on leaves on ash and elm". I can find no other references to it feeding on ash in the UK.

Since then it has been found at scattered sites in the south and east of the county. Most of these records have been of larval cases on elm. These are small, laterally compressed and squat, measuring 5-6mm. The dorsal keel often has some serrations. The mouth angle is 0-10o. Take care not to confuse these with the longer cases of C. limosipennella. Adults need dissection as they are similar to many other Coleophora species. For those dissecting these, take care not to confuse males with milvipennis or adjectella which have very similar genitalia, and the pictures in MBGBI are not reliable as milvipennis and badiipennella are transposed.

Determination by Genitalia Examination (gen. det.) Required
