Yorkshire Status: Rare and local resident.

We have few records of this rare species. The first was "near Bramham" according to H.I. Stainton in 1859. Wilkinson, in Theakston's Guide to Scarborough in 1868 says he found it "on leaves of grasses", and Porritt mentions a record from Everingham in his 1904 list. The next records were not until after 2000, and there have been scattered records since, all in the eastern part of the county, and all of adult moths. Adults are fairly distinctive. The confusion species is C. tricolor which has not been recorded in Yorkshire. The two species look very similar, but the antennae of tricolor are ringed for the entire length whereas they are white on the upperside and ringed on the underside in lixella. A bit subtle, but worth checking as it is not impossible that tricolor lurks in the county. The larvae feed on heads of thyme, using a seed head as a case, and then in spring, on blades of grass. They are apparently not easy to spot.

Verification Grade Comment: Adult: If photos, all complex antennal differences to exclude C. tricolor must be visible

Retained Specimen / Photograph will be Required.

Case: A good quality photo or specimen of the case and plant/pabulum and the bred moth is required.
