Yorkshire Status: Local resident.

Old records of this species are unreliable unless we know they were bred from birch. There was much confusion between the various white Coleophora species until the 1990s. Most of our records of C. betulella come from the south and centre of the county, though it may prove to be more widespread than these records suggest. Adults look extremely like some of the other white Coleophora species and should be dissected. Even then it is not always easy as the genitalia of this group of moths is rather similar. Before hibernation the young larva makes fleck mines. In spring, window feeding takes place. The final larval case is a rough pistol case about 7 mm in length, with a mouth angle of 30 to 45°, standing obliquely on the leaf. The only food plant is birch.
