Yorkshire Status: Local resident.

This is a rather elusive moth of damp woodland rides and "unimproved" grassland. Porritt knew it from several sites in the 19th century, but it then disappeared until it was seen again in 1999. Since then it has been recorded at scattered sites across the county, but there is still no record from VC65. It is the first Coleophora on the wing in May, so the early flight time gives a clue to its identity. The larval food plant is field wood-rush or sometimes the less common heath wood-rush. Adults need dissecting to separate them from similar species. The larval cases are not sufficiently distinctive to separate them from some of the rush-feeding Coleophora species which feed on wood-rush.
