Yorkshire Status: Very rare resident.

This is not a common species in Yorkshire, or perhaps it is just under-recorded. Our only records are as follows:

1887 - "Larvae on Potentilla tormentilla on the moors at Ingleborough, beginning of October, 1887". This was recorded as Stigmella serella which is now thought to be synonymous with S. poterii.
1975 - Woodsetts (VC64), recorded by Maitland Emmett and mentioned in Sutton and Beaumont. Foodplant unknown.
1981 - "Cleveland Hills", again Maitland Emmett. Recorded as S. serella. Foodplant unknown.
1982 - Harwood Dale. Again recorded as serella. Foodplant unknown.

Mines are found on salad burnet, great burnet, tormentil, marsh cinquefoil and cloudberry. They take the form of a slender gallery following the leaf-margin, widening into a blotch occupying nearly the whole of the leaflet. Mines are most easily confused with those made by diptera, so looking for a globular shining egg shell at the start of the mine is a good idea. The usual advice here is to breed mines through to the adult stage to be certain of the identification, as there is some confusion in that some of the rose-feeding species may utilise these plants.

Mine: Either the leaf or a good photograph required
