Yorkshire Status: Very common and widespread resident.

This is originally an Asiatic species and was introduced to Europe around 1840. By 1883 Porritt said that it was "abundant everywhere in houses, warehouses etc. It is very destructive in one's breeding cages, the larvae feeding on the pupae etc". Nowadays with our current lack of field craft and over-reliance on light traps, this is less of a problem, but it is still an abundant species both indoors and outside where it is often attracted to light. It probably has two broods outdoors, but can be continuously-brooded indoors and can be found in all months of the year.
