Yorkshire Status: Very common and widespread resident.

This is an extremely common species all across the county. Porritt in 1883 called it "as abundant as the last species (Brown House-moth), and almost as great a nuisance". The larvae feed on dead animal and vegetable matter, and can be found in sheds, barns, houses, bird's nests and at light. This is one of the few moths that can be found in any month of the year as it seems to be continuously-brooded indoors.

Recorded in 150 (75%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1950.
Last Recorded in 2024.
