Yorkshire Status: Common resident.

This seems to have always been a common moth in Yorkshire. In 1907 Porritt described it as "abundant everywhere". It is surprising that it was not found in VC65 until 2000. It is commonly found flying by day, especially in morning sunshine, and also comes to light. Larvae feed on dead wood and under bark. This is a sexually dimorphic species - the female has a much longer yellow streak from the base towards the tornus and a more prominent pale yellowish costal spot. As only the male is depicted in the Field Guide, this fools some people. The yellow hindwings can be seen in flight.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: A widespread and common moth but not recorded from VC65.

Recorded in 111 (56%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1859.
Last Recorded in 2024.
