Yorkshire Status: Common and widespread resident.

This is the only member of the Peleopodidae to occur in the UK and is a very distinctive beast with long antennae, that you are unlikely to confuse with any other. Porritt in 1907 said that it was "abundant everywhere" and this is still the case today. It's name quercana implies that it is an oak-feeder, and indeed it does enjoy oak, but it is polyphageous, feeding on a wide variety of deciduous trees and shrubs. Winter feeding is often done on evergreen bramble. The larvae feed under a silken web, usually alongside the central vein.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Widely recorded throughout all five vice-counties and often common.

Recorded in 140 (70%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1883.
Last Recorded in 2024.
