Yorkshire Status: Local resident

This early-flying species is mainly a moth of old birch woodland in Yorkshire, though it is said to also feed on hornbeam and lime. Its name avellanella might imply that it feeds on Corylus avellana ie hazel, but this does not seem to be a food plant in the UK. There are no records from VC65 which is surprising, and VC61 also has no records, though Skipwith Common would seem to be a suitable site. It could be mistaken for the later flying Semioscopis steinkellneriana, whose black streak does not start from the base of the wing, or perhaps if you were having a bad day, Diurnea fagella.

First Recorded in 1859.
