Yorkshire Status: Abundant and widespread resident.

In 1907 Porritt described this species as "abundant everywhere". Nothing has changed, and this is still a very common moth throughout the county. Like many of the genus, it hibernates in the winter, and can often be found in sheds or greenhouses. Larvae feed on various members of the Apiaceae, particularly cow parsley, hogweed and rough chervil. Adults can easily be confused with A. ciliella (for differences, see that species) and it may well be that a small number of our "heracliana are unrecognised ciliella, but the vast majority will be this species as it is by far the commoner of the two.

Sutton & Beaumont, 1989: Widespread and common throughout all five vice-counties.

Recorded in 129 (65%) of 200 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1859.
Last Recorded in 2025.
