Yorkshire Status: Uncommon and local resident.

Stigmella assimilella was first found in Yorkshire in 2010 when mines were found on aspen at Sandall Beat Wood in VC63. This seems to have been due to movement into the county from the south, rather than it having been an overlooked resident. Since then, it has been found at several sites in the county, but there is still no record from VC64, and it remains rather elusive. This is the only species of Stigmella that mines on aspen so is unlikely to be confused with any other species. In other parts of the country it has been seen on grey poplar, and rarely on white poplar. The mine is a densely winding corridor; later sections are strongly widened, almost forming a secondary blotch. The frass is in a more or less continuous central band that even in the narrow initial part, never completely fills the corridor.
